CCS Upper School Latin students are enrolled in the Virginia Junior Classical League with the payment of member fees of $5/student. Members may participate in conventions held each year. The VJCL State Convention is traditionally held at the Richmond Convention Center on the Sunday and Monday just before Thanksgiving. Students in Latin 2/3 and above may participate in this event with the permission of their Latin teacher. Those in grades 7 and up may choose to participate in the National Junior Classical League convention that occurs one week every summer (usually in late July). Students will receive information on these conventions from their Latin teachers at the appropriate time.
Upper School Latin students who enjoy challenging games are invited to compete in our Competitive Certamen program. Questions test participants’ knowledge of Roman history and culture, Latin grammar, and Greek/Roman mythology. A one hour practice session will follow Roman Culture on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Students will be encouraged to purchase a Certamen Notebook for $25 and must pay dues of $30 for admission to competitions. Approximately 8 competitions will be held in various locations throughout the state. For more information, go to Virginia Junior Classical League, click on "VJCL Academics" and then click on “Certamen”.
