LETTER FROM TEACHER 9/22/2020:

Dear Rhetoricians,

Once again, welcome to CCS for a new year, and welcome to your rhetoric class.

Attached you will find a copy of the syllabus, substantially the same as the one circulated in class. I also attach a copy of the readings and the relevant material from Cothran. If you are missing anything else, please just reach out. These attachments should hold you over, however, for the next few weeks.

Please just do what you can for Thursday; we will go over the material together in class. I apologize for the delay in getting these materials to you. The highest priority for preparation this week is the reading, in the following order of priority:

1) Aristotle, Rhetoric, 1354a-1355b, i.e. pp. 133-137 in the Sachs translation.

2) Adler, How to Read a Book, Ch. 5.

3) Cothran exercises, Week I. Please read through Cothran pp. 1-3 once before you start reading Aristotle the first time. This resembles a pre-reading exercise, and will help you know what you are looking for in the Aristotle reading.
